Watch beautifully decorated and lighted multi-million dollar yachts, small boats, kayaks and canoes parade Newport Harbor in Newport Beach. This annual event has occurred for nearly 100 years.
In 1908, Italian gondolier John Scarpa staged the first illuminated night boat parade through the harbor, starting a tradition that lasts to this day.
The parade normally occurs over a period of five consecutive nights in mid December. The parade normally starts off Collins Island at 6:30 p.m. and finishes at the same site at approximately 8:30 pm on a Wednesday and Thursday and ends at 9:00 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. (Two separate routes are run on different evenings.)
yachts, small boats, kayaks, canoes and
other small boats light up the harbor with a "dazzling array of
holiday lights and music." A number of boats include animated
scenes accompanied by music and costumed carolers.
The Christmas floats wind their way some 14 miles around the harbor. The New York Times called the parade "One of the...Top Ten Holiday Happenings in the Nation!"
Further, decorated bayside homes and businesses surrounding the harbor compete in the “Ring of Lights” contest "featuring everything from roof-top animated scenes to dancing Christmas trees."
The Catalina Flyer and Pavilion Paddy (docked at the Balboa Pavilion) offer public runs. Call (949) 675-5245 for reservations. All tickets are prepaid.
The Harborside Grand Ballroom, located upstairs at the Balboa Pavilion, is also available to banquets (advanced booking for December required). For more information, call (949) 673-4633.
